Percutaneous Neuromodulation Therapy (PNT)

Percutaneous neuromodulation therapy (PNT) is a new, non-surgical treatment, which utilizes the application of electrical stimulation to deep structures of the back, can help to provide some pain relief. The procedure in minimally invasive and can be performed in the doctors office. It was developed to treat patients with chronic recurring low back pain, radiating leg pain, intractable pain, and for those who have not responded favorably to conservative treatment methods.

Research has demonstrated that a single episode of back pain can cause nerve cells that transmit pain to become "hypersensitive".  This hypersensitivity may persist after the original injury has healed.  Electrical stimulation applied to the deep tissues in the back can help provide relief for some forms of chronic pain.  The application of PNT uses very fine needles that are placed into the deep tissues of the spine in the area of pain.  The application of electrical stimulation through carefully positioned needles may help reduce pain.  The therapeutic mechanisms may be similar to that which occurs with TENS, PNS or electroacupuncture.
